How It Started
1888 Coffee House was born from a simple belief: that the best ideas often start over a great cup of coffee. Located in the heart of Kansas City's historic Hyde Park neighborhood, we opened our doors with a mission to serve exceptional coffee while honoring the rich history of our community.
Every detail of our space was designed with intention - blending vintage charm with modern comfort to create an environment where people feel at home. Whether you're grabbing a quick espresso or settling in for a few hours of work, you're part of our story.
Why "1888"?
Our name pays tribute to George E. Kessler, the legendary landscape architect who shaped Kansas City. In 1888, Kessler was commissioned to transform a wild ravine into what would become Hyde Park - one of Kansas City's first planned neighborhoods. He cleaned the brush, created winding paths, and planted trees while preserving the natural limestone outcroppings. His vision turned an overgrown hollow into a beloved urban oasis that still stands today. We're proud to carry that year as our name, connecting our coffee house to the historic roots of our Hyde Park home.

Our Coffee
Great coffee starts with great beans. We've partnered with a local Kansas City roaster to bring you premium specialty-grade 100% Arabica beans, small-batch drum roasted right here in KC. Our beans are sourced from sustainable farms and co-ops around the world, with many certified Fair Trade or Organic.
From rich heritage espressos to single-origin pour-overs, every cup is crafted with care. Our baristas are trained to bring out the best in every bean - whether you prefer a bold shot, a smooth latte, or one of our signature refreshers. We believe that coffee is both an art and a science, and we take pride in mastering both.
